Mold Investigation & Remediation

We need to first understand that mold is everywhere and without mold; our ecological balance would be disrupted. Mold breaks down organic substances in our environment. I like to call mold our earth’s garbage disposal; without it, the leaves and tree branches would just pile up.

When is mold harmful?

Harmful Mold

Have you ever smelled that musty and mildew odor from a basement, room over a crawl space or slab? That odor is the volatile organic compounds that mold emits when it is reproducing. There is a balance between what levels of mold spores are in our outdoor environment and indoor environment. It is when the indoor levels substantially exceeds the outdoor levels we then define the levels of mold as elevated. One of the most frequent allergies developed by people all over the world is a mold allergy. Like all airborne allergies, the mold allergy is triggered by inhaling the mold spores. In an attempt to protect the body, the immune system of the allergic person produces antibodies called immunoglobulin E (IgE). Those antibodies then cause mast cells and basophils (allergy cells in the body) to release chemicals, including histamine into the bloodstream to defend against the allergen “invader”. Our body reacts with skin rashes, swelling, itchy eyes, running nose, throat irritation, or breathing troubles. When this happens to children the effects can be devastating, because their body is young and it still needs to fully develop its immune system.

When should we test for mold?

Test for mold.

You have an illness that you suspect may be a reaction to your indoor air quality environment. One of the questions I ask many clients; do you feel different when you are away from the room, office or residence you suspect is contributing to your health concerns?

You physically see mold and want to know the specie(s) and the extent it may have spread airborne to other locations of the building.

You smell that musty odor.

You have had a water event that was not completely dried within 48 hours.

Your home or office has a history of humidity levels above 55%.

You have health concerns and are moving into a new location where you would like an assessment of the indoor air quality.

Can I clean up the mold myself?

Professional Mold Cleanup

Please note that unless the source of moisture is removed mold growth is likely to recur.

Who should do the cleanup depends on a number of factors. One consideration is the size of the mold problem. If the moldy area is less than about 10 square feet (less than roughly a 3 ft. by 3 ft. patch), in most cases, you can handle the job yourself. There is much misinformation concerning what to use for a small remediation mold cleanup. Contrary to those who state to use a bleach solution, bleach is not an effective mold killer and in fact can make the problem worse on porous surfaces. My advice is to use a mild detergent solution and consult with the EPA http://www.epa.gov/ web site for their specific guidelines. If you smell mold then the mold is generally airborne and should be handled by a professional. For larger areas, mold remediation follows very similar guidelines to the protocol used for lead or asbestos abatement. Containment is the key to making sure the mold spores are not spread to other areas of the building. Using negative air machines, air scrubbers, commercial hepa vacuums, personal protection equipment, biocides and the proper disposal of contaminated material is what differentiates a properly done job to those who are inexperienced.
